The Spanish Ministry of Defense gives the go-ahead to GDELS-SBS in order to constitute the company that will execute the VCR 8x8 Program along with INDRA, Sapa Placencia and Escribano

  • The partnership will be responsible for the supply of 348 8x8 Wheeled Combat vehicles (VCR), as well as their maintenance and life cycle support and international marketing.
  • The objective of the four companies through this partnership is to satisfy all the operational objectives, and as well to meet all the needs of the Army and the Ministry of Defense and that the fighting vehicle program becomes an element of the national industry.

GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, Indra Sistemas, Sapa Placencia and Escribano Mechanical & Engineering will constitute a company that will be in charge of executing the VCR 8x8 Program, when the Ministry of Defense signs the commitment that allows the constitution of said company.

This company will be in charge of the supply of 348 8x8 Wheeled Combat Vehicles (VCR), as well as their maintenance and life cycle support, and their international commercialization. These vehicles will be delivered within an estimated period of seven years from the end of the development of the program.

The objective of the four companies through this partnership is to satisfy all the operational objectives and meeting the needs of the Spanish Army as well as the Ministry of Defense and that the VCR 8x8 Program becomes a driving force in the national industry. In this regard, the development of the program involves an ambitious National Industrial Plan, thereby facilitating the authority of design maintainance in Spain and fostering widespread participation by national industry in this, at a percentage of no less than 70%.

The programme will have a special impact in Asturias, Seville, Guipúzcoa and Madrid, where the creation of 650 direct jobs and another 1,000 indirect ones is foreseen.

The programme will additionally generate industrial property for national industry and will allow national sovereignty to be maintained over a product that represents an essential capacity for national defence.
